The Joy (and difficulty) of Eating Farm to Table

Last week I had the absolute blessing of eating a meal almost entirely from our own homestead, meat included.

What is really astounding to me, is that for most of history, this was normal. What is also astounding, is that I have had to learn what was once second nature (i think?) from scratch using youtube and the internet.

I will give a brief overview of how we got here. I grew up in the city! A small town really, but with plenty of grocery stores, and not much garden space. My family ate a typical city diet, grew some food crops and flowers, and I learnt to bake a bit and cook a little less. I ate freshly caught fish and learnt how to cook it well camping with my grandparents but that was about as gritty as it got.

Since I was about 17 I have been on a journey of self-sufficiency (and by that I mean realizing this is an entirely impossible and lofty goal) and of teaching myself to be a homesteader. Luckily my partner has many skills and is just as enthusiastic about it as myself, but lots of this is new to him too. But together we have learnt, and our homestead is always growing!

And last week, we ate a farm to table meal INCLUDING meat! Which is a big deal, because we love and need some hearty meat with our meals. (It is amazing how much more secure I feel when we add some sort of…
